truth (2006)

chilled
ice
slides down my throat
creamy and frothy
like hope
a cool satisfaction
then, wind
warm and prevailing
causing my words
to melt

Oscars 2006

Look who
made it to the silver screen
got
long lean
lines
trailers for miles
look out!

got drama
that weeps
and laughs
and pauses
and moves

cause colored people bend
and move
with force

and this is for the stellar,
yes the stellar

but somewhere, somehow, something
went wrong

we're
killer cops

pimp walking
gimps

and highfalutin
whores

unabashedly yours
please sign
the autograph on the dotted line

indistinguishable
individuality
we would have if
us were not we

rapping and acting and cracking jokes
all look alike, to me, you say

red carpet dazzle that leads to
silver screens
sequestering us
like giftwrapped silver screams

but we still dream

Six seconds to answer the phone
she said that he had stopped breathing five minutes ago
Four paramedics
worked for three hours
blowing and pushing breath to revive his tired body
To find him laying there, blood spatterings in firework sprays
Was too much

42 homicides, she said, 42 homicides out of 100,000

and this one was mine.

honey child (spoken word, 2006)

with your bronzed skin style
grew up double dutching with two ropes--
your heart and your mind

head knockers
knockin'
jaw breakers poppin
hips lockin
eyes sparklin'
and although boys be jockin
you ain't poplockin
on the block
you just plottin
waiting for a chance to
spin the world like a record
that don't stop

Honey child
Ready for the world
brown skinned girl
got fire in your eyes
and a smile in your soul

Honey child
who picks up the beat
like (Ping Ping)pick up sticks
knows when to head roll
and take her licks
sold her kicks
to build her bricks
as she's moving on up
and like Harriet
bringing others
with her

but you'd have to be a king
to get her
and if you got with her
your soul's got
coolwater
so you know you smellin' good
but you can't buy this water
in your local hood

no matter how phat your pockets
or fly your spinners
you got to earn her love

she's
tough but not hard
heavy but not phat
kind but not weak
Yes, she's all that

and

Honey child
knows her history, too
can tell you Columbus wasn't first
to sail the ocean blue

and when she drops knowledge
heads have to go back to college
to understand
her boom clock, boom clock banana rock
but you better back up
if you got the "r tick toc"

because she ain’t got time for haters
and perpetrators
bootleggers and fake collaborators

she expects great things
yes, she expects great things
things beyond designer fashion
and diamond rings

and as she grows
this girl knows
that she's got power
in her walk
shoot,
honey child might make
a d-boy give up rock
the thug
put down his glock
and the smooth operator
put away this talk

She got mo' game than monopoly
but only uses it as a last resort
and in her mind you'll find a love so sublime
that weapons of mass destruction
can't break it

but whatever way you take it

honey child
is just a plain old girl
but like honey to the lips
and she's like a diamond to a pearl

she's
cool, but not cold
nice but not sweet
proud but not vain
fresh, but so deep

and like a flower in the sidewalk
she blooms the brightest
when she looks up at you
with her big brown eyes
yes, she makes you want to be better
yes, she makes you want to be better

She makes you want to
fight your way out of the storm

Two Souljahs at War (2006)

"Two wrongs don't make a right
But it damn sure makes it even."
She said
While
Dressing her
America
in tin
foil red
looking for the silver lining
mad
because
somebody bought the last box

unconventional label
and yet
a familiar brand name
of spiteful pain

her suffering is oddly
ubiquitous
popularly obsolete
a throwback kinda love
not subtle like quilts
but brazen like gold lame
after all,
no one wears white hoods
after labor day
especially on the supreme court

“Even for children who grow to hate their mothers,
their hatred will be the strongest love they know”
she wrote,

and like the prodigal son, there he was

waiting for the moment
This man
Of big appetites and big dreams
This man
rumored to have read everything ever written about himself
This man who
Circled a contract with America
In red
Decidedly
And with finality
And found a loophole

He has to take
This one down
To win the crown
has to play the game
to mark touch down
as cleats meet
feet
and turf meets earth
cheered on by a crossover crowd
we know so well

In his America
Everyday
Elections
light up every window

electrifying electorates
Spin towards earth
Like falling stars
Or snowy jazz
With a deep breathed “Ah”

And so,
Mother to son
we watch him climb the stairs
reach the landing
and throw the ornament
watch it shatter
unmoved

this man
enchanting
as he is
estranged
from
truth
and yet
his lies
have root
in American dreams
and for that, we forgave

we feed him grits
And how many a times did we turn to him
This lover, raw like greens
To a bare stomach
So in sync with their world
And yet could never overcome it

We call him native son
From a different tongue
And crown him with
Our crushed dreams

But there is an uneasiness
About that song of long ago

The wanderlust lover,
Doin’ her up like Christmas
Calling out to her
bare brown legs
On a familiar street corner
listening to the
click-clak tap, tap
as high heels come running
looking for the fight
---her flaw

now she’s patented
Without permission
Given to tradition
One man made King David
"Queen" Esther
made
up
with nowhere to go

A Christmas star
he puts her back on the shelf
after the
season
passes
quickly
and
unevenly

still life (2006)

the nape of the world
is
dressed in earthy brown
feet bathed in chocolate streams

hibiscus lips
leave impressions
in
mountains

the clean canvas of sky
is golden matte
applied with
hazy eyeshadow
colors
rusts
rubies
stardust
sages
purple peacocks

the bare curve of the
valley is
draped in swimming
shimmering gowns
of waters
that mirror stars

the wry grin
of a lulling wind
as it catches
glimpses of itself
a
bride
on a bed
of brie
and
baby's breath

we take in
the beauty of
night
on the neck
and behind the knees
as the world
gets ready
for
love

APPLAUSE. Xavier, 23, dressed in African garb, takes the mike.

XAVIER
Thank you Ms. Mavis. I was feeling that. Keep the cipher flowing y’all.

A young man takes the mike and starts flowing. MAVIS moves back into the circle, woozy and pale. Nikki, her best friend 17, stares.

NIKKI
What?

INT. PORT-A-POTTY — TOILET BOWL
Mavis throws up. There is a line outside. Someone is beating on the door behind her.

SADIQ
(O.S.)
Open up! Come on! People gotta relieve themselves!

She opens the port a potty door. SADIQ, eighteen DREADS.

SADIQ
I hope can go in there now.

Mavis wipes her mouth with her sleeve and rolls her eyes.

SADIQ
Giving her a once over-

Sorry. Umm, Your name is Mavis, isn’t it?

MAVIS walks away.

While SADIQ is looking at her A LITTLE GIRL holding her crotch runs in the Port and locks the door.

SADIQ
Hey!

Mavis laughs and walks back towards Nikki who is several feet away. Mavis lights up a cigarette.

NIKKI
Have you noticed any of the just say no ads, lately?

MAVIS
No. (Eyes Sadiq)

NIKKI
(Catching a glance of Sadiq leaving the stall)
Sadiq. I had English with him last year. He’s a little strange, but he’s cool. He plays the guitar with Xavier.

MAVIS
(glancing at her watch)
Shoot I was supposed to be home an hour ago. (Running off) I’ll call you!

INT. CHAMP’S HOME

Marcus, 14 Mavis’ brother is playing dominoes Travis and Nadine, her parents. Travis is dressed in his AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION uniform. Nadine is in her nurse's outfit. Mavis enters.

TRAVIS
Where were you?

MAVIS
I told you I was going to the poetry fest.

MARCUS
I got ten on that, mama.

TRAVIS
You don’t tell me nothing. When I say be here, you’d better. Get the dishes. Gimme ten.

MAVIS
It was Marcus’s turn.

TRAVIS
It was your turn. And lock that dog door when you let Pookie in from now on. It was open the other night.

Mavis storms into the kitchen. Water. Pots slam.

MARCUS
And you don’t break nothing!

Another pot slams.
MARCUS
Twenty, big baby!

NADINE hits Marcus on the head.

NADINE
Travis you’re ridiculous.

TRAVIS
The girl needs to learn some discipline, Nadine.

NADINE
Mavis is just spirited. She wants to change the world.

TRAVIS
I’ll tell you what. You bail your spirited daughter out of jail then next time she tries the world. I know about gentrification! Huey lived on my block…

DOORWAY
Mavis peaks in on the conversation.

MARCUS
Aww daag mama! Why you get him started? Ay Daddy you play ball with OJ, too?

TRAVIS
(glares at Marcus)You oughta try to learn something. Charity starts at home. I keep my kids off the streets. That’s my contribution to world peace.
DOORWAY
Mavis slides to the ground, dishrag in hand.

MARCUS
Break a playa off ten, mama!

NADINE
Myrna told me the other day that some folks knocked her door and offered her 85,000 on the spot to sell. And she actually was thinking about it!

TRAVIS
Once they build the new school it will be worth three times as much. She’d gonna fool around and not be able to live in the “community” she’s trying to save.

NADINE
If Aunt Lucy hadn’t sold us this house we'd be the ones getting evicted. Ten. Getting old and complacent in our old age aren't we?

TRAVIS
That’s the beauty of it. I’m too old to be anything else.

Marcus slams the table. Everything shakes.

MARCUS
Domino!

EXT. CHAMP’S HOME - DAYTIME
Sadiq walks down the street guitar on back. Xavier’s car pulls up. Xavier gets out. They give each other a pound.

XAVIER
Sup player. Where you at?

SADIQ
My grandmother’s house.

XAVIER
I’m sorry to hear about her passing, man. She was a strong lady. (beat, then) Where’s the ridah?

SADIQ
Ridah got into a little accident.

XAVIER
Ran into a tree, huh?

SADIQ
Oh you got jokes? Them days are over.

XAVIER
I’ll believe that when I see it. I work Saturday nights if need a ride.

Inside of Sadiq’s coat something is clawing and scratching. He opens up his coat and takes out a scraggly skinny kitten.

XAVIER
What is that?

SADIQ
I found her last night in my grandmother’s yard. I don’t have a name for her.

XAVIER
How ‘bout ugly?

SADIQ
I was thinking Destiny.

XAVIER
Whatever.

Sadiq sets Destiny down on the ground and returns to talking with Xavier. While they talk the curious kitten walks through the gates in front of Mavis’ house. She trots toward the the dog door and sniffs.

XAVIER
I want you and Nigel to play this weekend at the center. Heads ain’t sleeping on the live instrumentals. You down?

SADIQ
Yeah--No!

Sadiq notices Destiny and her but she runs inside.

SADIQ
Dang!

Sadiq looks around the yard for the dog, then opens the gate. Xavier follows reluctantly. Sadiq knocks on the door. No answer.

XAVIER
My sisters homegirl stays here.

Sadiq peaks through the dog door. No kitten.

Xavier
What are you doing?

MAVIS’ROOM
Mavis is lays on the bed asleep. Pookie the dog opens his eyes briefly the goes back to sleep.

PORCH
Sadiq takes off his guitar case and lays it on the porch. Eyes the LARGE dog door.

SADIQ
How big is their dog?

XAVIER
I never see the dog. Look, why don’t we just hit up my crib and call from there.

MAVIS’ ROOM
MAVIS is still asleep, but POOKIE opens an eye.

PORCH
Sadiq bends down on his knees and sticks his head through the dog door.

INT. KITCHEN DOG DOOR

SADIQ
I’m just gonna try and get her.

SADIQ looks around. He turns his head and sees the kitten drinking out a VERY LARGE DOG BOWL that says “POOKIE”. The size of the bowl dwarfs the kitten.

MAVIS’ ROOM
Pookie has moved on top of Mavis’ legs. Mavis wakes up, and rubs her eyes. She kicks Pookie off her legs. He heads downstairs.

INT. KITCHEN

XAVIER
(O.S)
Sadiq, this is stupid! What if somebody sees us?

DOG DOOR-KITCHEN
Sadiq looks around for the dog. He takes a deep breath and starts crawling through the door. He squeezes his frame through using his forearms for balance. When he is through he gets up and picks up the cat and scratches its head.

SADIQ
Females.

Suddenly POOKIE arrives barking like crazy. He sees Sadiq and barks. The kitten SCREAMS. Sadiq jumps up on the counter top with the kitten.

SADIQ
It’s the Dog! It’s the dog, man!

MAVIS’ ROOM
Mavis wakes up and springs down the stairs. She walks through the living room into the kitchen and sees Sadiq on top of the counter with the cat. She recognizes Sadiq, and grabs a butcher knife on the counter.

MAVIS
Oh so you wanted a piece of this, huh? You ‘bout to get cut up!

SADIQ
My cat crawled through your dog door. Nikki’s brother is outside. Now can you call off killa?

Pookie growls and jumps up at Sadiq.

SADIQ
(To Pookie) I was just playing! Down! Xavier! Tell this girl to call off her dog!

XAVIER
(OS)
Mavis. Chill alriight. He’s telling the truth!

EXT. CHAMP’S HOUSE—GARAGE
Travis Champ’s car is pulling into the driveway. Travis looks quizzically at Xavier. Xavier waves.

XAVIER
Girl just call off the dog!

Mavis is confused by Xavier voice. Travis walks in through the garage door entering the kitchen. Stops for a second taking in the whole scene.

EXT. THE CHAMP’S HOME—FRONT PORCH

The kitten is in Sadiq’s hand licking itself. Travis stands in front Xavier and Sadiq. Mavis stands to the side.

XAVIER
…that’s what happened. Sadiq is sort of like a little brother to me and sometimes he’s hotheaded.

Sadiq rolls his eyes, takes out a toothpick. Xavier elbows him. Travis lights a cigarette. Then he eyes Sadiq.

TRAVIS
My problem isn’t with you ,Xavier.(To Sadiq) Do you know what trespassing is?

Sadiq nods.

TRAVIS
I don’t think you do.(To Mavis)Didn’t I tell you to lock that dog door when that dog’s inside?

MAVIS
But Daddy-

TRAVIS
Get in that house.

Mavis stomps in the house. Travis puts the gun back in his boot.
TRAVIS
I see you around here again, it’s me and you.

Travis slams the door. Xavier and Sadiq leave the yard and retrun to the street. Sadiq opens his mouth to speak but Xavier cuts him off.

XAVIER
Don’t say nothing. You owe.

Sadiq looks back. For a fleeting second he thinks he sees Mavis watching him from the window.

EXT. LA FRONTERA HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

Mavis and Nikki are walking to class.

LOUDSPEAKERS
The new quarter begins today. Pick up your new schedules in the office.

NIKKI
What you got?

MAVIS Hands Nikki her schedule. AP Bio, AP History, AP English and Poetry.

NIKKI
Overachiever strikes again.

Mavis smiles. They make their way up the steps into the building. A security guard with gun in holster checks student’s backpacks. A sign that says,”You are being videotaped.” AQUILA and her fly girl crew walk by and cut to the front of the line. All are sporting hooch wear.

AQUILA
Head wrap heifers.

They push to the front of the line and laugh.

NIKKI
No she didn’t just call me a heifer!

MAVIS
No she didn’t insult my head wrap. What we should be asking is why you got a skirt on that high and it is 50 degrees out?

DELORES, a dark haired Latina, and APRIL, a blonde, walk by overhearing their conversation.

APRIL
Wait till her cheeks hit that cold desk. She know this school can’t afford heat!

MAVIS
Sup April, Delores. You coming to open mic this weekend?

DELORES
You know we’re there, girl.

Aquila and friends roll their eyes and walk through the metal detector.

MAVIS
What are they gonna find? Her fillings?

INT. VIDEO PRODUCTION CLASS
The students are all sitting in their seats looking warm and tired. Mavis sits in the front row, April next to her. Aquila sits near the back. They wait for the teacher to arrive. Andre Ridge, Mavis’ ex boyfriend is eighteen, tall, muscular and wearing a football uniform. He eyes Mavis’ booty and smacks it. Mavis stands up.

MAVIS
I don’t know who you think I am but I’m not her. Don’t ever put your hands on me.

ANDRE
Oh, I’m sorry. You too good for a brotha to appreciate your better half?

Laughter from the class. Mavis shoots Andre a look. It is clear he’s upset her.

APRIL
What if somebody did that to your sister, Andre?

ANDRE
Why don’t you stay outta grown folks business, Mighty Mouse!

The class laughs. Mr. Vargas enters, with a briefcase.

Mr. VARGAS
Ahem. Hello. Some of you are here because you heard Poetry is an easy A. It isn’t. Poetry requires discipline, technique. There will be a required group project due at the end of the quarter worth forty percent of your grade. You will be assigned to groups of three.

Sadiq enters the room. He has his guitar strapped on his back and a blue slip in hand. Some of the kids whisper and giggle.

ANDRE
Ever heard of a brush, Rasta?

SADIQ
Ever heard of a breath mint?

MR. VARGAS
Mr. Ridge.

Sadiq hands Mr. Vargas the paper.

MR. VARGAS
Have a seat over there, Mr. Taylor.

Sadiq walks past Mavis on the way to his seat. He looks at her. She looks away.

Mr. VARGAS
We’ll be reading Elements of Style. You can’t take the books home because I only have a class set so…

TIME ELAPSES
Mavis is asleep. Mr. Vargas taps her. She awakes.

MR. VARGAS
While you were out, you got partners.

Mr. VARGAS motions toward Sadiq and Andre, who both look supremely unhappy.

MR. VARGAS
Your assignment is to create a group portfolio of oral poetry that can be shared with the class. You’ll work in teams. This year I am encouraging students to videotape their work, so that you can critique yourself.

MAVIS
Mr. Vargas I really need to change groups!

MR. VARGAS
Try being awake in my class next time and maybe I’ll consider your requests.

The Bell Rings. Andre dashes out. Mavis looks at Sadiq and scowls.

INT. COUNSELOR’S OFFICE
Mrs. Rose, who looks anything but rosy, leafs through Mavis’s application file.

MRS. ROSE
Berkeley, USC, Columbia, NYU. These are all very competitive schools, Mavis. Expensive, even with financial aid. I’m going to be honest. Your grades are good, but this is a different ball game here. You didn’t even apply to state. You know you don’t have to attend any of these colleges now. There is nothing wrong a JC. You might benefit from giving yourself time to mature, to develop as a student.

MAVIS
I might benefit from a new counselor.

Mavis walks out.

INT. LIBRARY

SADIQ is reading The Autobiography of Assata Shakur. Mavis sits opposite him writing in her notebook. No Andre. Clock ticks.

INT. MAVIS’ BEDROOM–DAY

Mavis is laid across the bed looking at the glow stars on her wall. She is talking on the phone with Nikki. Nikki’s in her room with glasses and a check list.

NIKKI
So?

MAVIS
I told my daddy we needed to study. I got my clothes.

NIKKI
Freaky Friday, big baby! My mama and Daddy are gone this weekend, check, Delores and April are coming, check, I got the stipper tape from Kenesha’s birthday party, check, and Xavier will pick you up.

MAVIS
I don’t ever want you to be that excited about some raggedy stripper.

NIKKI
Hey, don’t hate. That’s as close to the real thing as some of us are gonna get. Let’s see did I forget anything? Oh, and bring my crunch bars this time, Negro. You ate them all last time.

MAVIS
Don’t remind me, I think they found a new home. (Mavis pats her hips) Man, I need to go run the track.

NIKKI
Girl, stop tripping. There is nothing wrong with you. But I will expect my crunch bars to be paid in full.

INT. LIBRARY MAVIS

Mavis and Sadiq sit, SADIQ is reading The Autobiography of Assata Shakur while MAVIS talks, biting in a hotdog. He offers her a bite.

MAVIS
I don’t eat meat. Look, if you don’t help plan this then you are doing the write up. Where’s your notes?

Sadiq opens his guitar case and takes out some crumpled papers.

MAVIS sighs.
EXT. STREET
Mavis is walking down the street, headphones on. Her shirt reads: REPRESENT. She passes ANDRE and group of brothers hanging out, laughing. Larry smiles.

ANDRE
Ay!

Mavis ignores him and keeps walking. He looks at Donnell, his boy and follows her. He grabs her earphones and slides them down.

ANDRE
I called you.

MAVIS
I’m not your dog.

ANDRE
Don’t. You too fine to look so mean. Dang girl, the thighs is getting kinda chunky. I’m gonna have to get you running with me again.

Andre fiddles with her leg. Mavis slaps his hand away. His boys laugh.

MAVIS
(Loudly) Say that a little louder, I think Donnell missed a word. (Lower) You don’t run me anymore, Andre. And I’m not doing your work for you so you better start showing up for the meetings.

Mavis starts walking away, but Andre grabs her arm.

ANDRE
(in a lowered voice)
Look girl, I’m sorry about that. See this?

Andre hands her a piece of paper.

ANDRE
They’re starting me this fall. Another year, I might go pro. You better get up on this before the females start jocking.

MAVIS
She’d be doing me a favor.

ANDRE
You’re realer than those girls, Mavis, but you need to stop being so hardheaded and listen for a change. I’m not gonna keep calling you waiting for you to be home.

MAVIS
Oh, I’m sorry. I guess I should stop everything I’m doing, because of course, I have nothing to do anyway but sit by the phone waiting for you to tell me I AM, SOMEBODY!

ANDRE
You know it’s not like that.

MAVIS
Maybe you like drama, but I don’t Andre. Especially the kind where Mavis falls for the big baller and he messes with everything a skirt but can’t admit to his boys that he’s talking to the nerd who won’t give it up.

ANDRE
Well, then, I guess I’ll see you later.

INT. CHAMPS LIVING ROOM

Mavis is pacing the floor reciting her poem to herself under her breath, in the mirror plotting out the performance movements. Her poetry book lays on the table. MARCUS and TRAVIS are watching the basketball. Travis is smoking.

MARCUS
Daddy why she gotta do that in here?

TRAVIS
Hush.

MARCUS
Ay yo Mavis, you mind?

TRAVIS
Shut up! Ah! What is wrong with them?

MARCUS
They’ll come up.

MARCUS Watches MAVIS. He picks the book off the table and flips through it. He reads a page and starts laughing.

MARCUS
AH HA. This is funny!

MAVIS sees MARCUS with the book. She tries to snatch it away from MARCUS. HE struggles he ELBOWS her eye. Travis turns around. MAVIS screams but recovers quickly and grabs for Marcus but he jumps over the couch. She starts after him but Travis catches her leg and restrains a flailing Mavis. Marcus tears a page out the book and flings it to the ground. Remote flicks to the “Body Shaper” commercial. Barbie doll looking woman rocking back and forth humping an odd looking contraption.

TRAVIS
Sit down.

MARCUS
You better get her Daddy. She’s trying to attack me!

MAVIS
I’m going to kill you!

TRAVIS
Shut up and sit in the chair, Mavis.

MARCUS
Daddy you let Mavis write stuff like this..?

Reading the notebook page--
MARCUS
your sweet eclectic lips between my hips

TRAVIS
Sit down, now!

Marcus complies and sits in the chair opposite the couch. Travis sits Mavis on the couch.

TRAVIS
You just don’t quit.

MAVIS
Look at my book!

TRAVIS
I don’t care about that damn poetry book! You don’t get that do you? I’m warning you, Mavis. Get it together.

INFORMERCIAL BARBIE
Shape, Shape, Shape your way to firmer buns and abs!

EXT. XAVIER’S RIDE-NIGHT

Xavier drives down Martin Luther King Way in a small car with tinted windows. Xavier bumps loud music. A large box marked FRAGILE sits up front. In the back seat is Sadiq. SADIQ’s legs are smushed. Xavier pulls up outside Mavis’ house and cuts the music off.

SADIQ
What is this? Why we stopping?

XAVIER
Hide your head. I gotta pick up Mavis.

A jealous look from SADIQ in the Mirror.

XAVIER
I’m dropping her off at my sister’s house. You trying to holla or something?

Sadiq tries to play it off. Mavis exits the house and locks the door. She’s wearing some old sweats and a pullover. Her left eye is blackened. She approaches Xavier's side.

XAVIER
Who been beating on you?

MAVIS
Accident.

XAVIER
That’s what they all say.

MAVIS
Can I get in or what?

XAVIER
You gotta ride in back because I got some stuff up here.

Mavis opens the door and sees Sadiq.

MAVIS
Ahh hell naw! What’s he doing here?

XAVIER
Same thing you’re doing.

MAVIS
I’m not riding next to him!

XAVIER
Mighty demanding to be a pedestrian, ain’t you? Wanna walk?

Mavis huffs and gets in the car. They drive past a scene where the police have a young black male and female placed with hands against the walls. All three watch. Mavis’ jaw works. Xavier pulls into a pizza place. He gets out the car and starts for the entrance. Sadiq opens the door and starts after him.

SADIQ
I thought you was trying to drop her off!

XAVIER
Yeah well a brother is hungry, okay? I’ll be back.

SADIQ
I have a show at nine! What am I supposed to do?

XAVIER
Why don’t you try having a little patience? Talk to her or something.

Sadiq returns to the car and takes a seat. Mavis stares out the window.

SADIQ
So, uh what happened to your eye?

MAVIS
What?

SADIQ
Look like you got stole on.

MAVIS
Look like you ask too many questions. Mind your business.

SADIQ
Just making conversation.

MAVIS
Well don’t.

MAVIS tries to fight back tears, but they get the best of her. She bites her lip.

SADIQ
Look Mavis, I know I ain’t your favorite person, but whatever happened to you it will be alright.

MAVIS
No it won’t.

SADIQ
Turn around. No cracks.

Mavis turns around. Sadiq tries to touch the bottom of Mavis’ eye. Mavis flinches.

SADIQ
It hurts?

MAVIS
Ow!

Mavis closes her eyes. Sadiq examines it with his thumb. Wipes away a tear.

SADIQ
It will heal.

SILENCE, STARING Then-Xavier returns to the car with the pizza and throws it into Mavis’ lap from off screen.

XAVIER
(O.S.)
Hold onto this Mavis.

Mavis looks out the window. Sadiq plays with his fingers. Xavier sticks his head out over the back seat to get a closer look.

XAVIER
I hope you two didn’t kill each other.

SADIQ
Just put the ride in gear. Did it ever occur to you that people got things to do?

XAVIER
People to do. You gonna see Aquila soon enough.

Mavis shoots a brief hurt look then returns to looking out the window. Xavier starts the ride, turns music on. Sadiq glances at Mavis then looks down.

EXT. THE PARK - DAY.

Mavis sits on the park bench waiting. A camcorder rests next to her in a black case. She looks at her watch. Sadiq swoops in riding in.

MAVIS
Let’s get this over with.

Mavis opens the black cast and removes camcorder. Sadiq sits down next to her.

SADIQ
Where’s your man?

MAVIS
He’s not my man, and he’s not here, okay? Did you even bring a pencil?

SADIQ
I keep my poetry in my head. Do you always write outside?

MAVIS
I needed a change of scenery. Besides we wen’t getting any work done in the library.

Mavis heads toward the swing and has a seat. Sadiq grabs his guitar and follows. Mavis takes a piece of gum out her pocket and starts smacking. As an afterthought she offers Sadiq a piece.

SADIQ
Why you so mean?

MAVIS
I’m not mean, I’m complicated.

SADIQ
How complicated can you be at seventeen?

MAVIS
People are complicated.

SADIQ
Like who?

MAVIS
People.

SADIQ
Like Andre?

MAVIS
Why are you so interested in him?

SADIQ
I’m not. It’s just that, you know, well, you’re different than most of the girls he hollas at. You should be with somebody who likes who you are. Do your own thing.

MAVIS
Is that what you do?

SADIQ
Most of the time.

MAVIS
Uh huh. That’s why you talked to Aquila.

SADIQ
See that’s how rumors get started. Who told you I still talked to her?

Mavis
Well don’t you?

SADIQ
She’s all chase, and I don’t chase girls no more.

MAVIS
They chase you?

SADIQ
You ain’t gotta believe me.

MAVIS
Oh, I don’t.

SADIQ
I chase my music.

Sadiq picks up a rock and throws it.

MAVIS
I’m not trying to be in your business, but why did you come all the way out here to go to school, before you moved?

SADIQ
Got into a little trouble.

MAVIS
Oh. I don’t feel like catching the bus.

SADIQ
Too bad I don’t have the Black Ridah.

MAVIS
That Black Jetta? What happened?

SADIQ
I’m hard on the gas. I should have the money in a few weeks. 'Til then it is just me and Alfia.

SADIQ pats his guitar.

MAVIS
Why does “she” gotta be an inanimate object?

SADIQ
Alfia was my grandmother’s name.

MAVIS
She should be a song, then. Play something.

Sadiq opens his guitar case. He strums a few chords and then starts playing. Mavis watches, still holding the camcorder in her lap. Sadiq ends of the song. He looks up, leans in to kiss her. The camcorder slips out of Mavis’ hand and tumbles to the ground. When they break away from each other, Mavis notices the camera. She picks it up immediately and tries to turn it on but nothing happens.

MAVIS
My daddy is gonna kill me.

ABRUPT CUT TO:

INT. CHAMP’s HOUSE – KITCHEN - EARLY EVENING

Mavis stone faced, sits at the table facing TRAVIS.

TRAVIS
You’re late.

Nadine packages up red beans and rice on the stove into Tupperware bowls. MARCUS pretends to be taking out the trash, so he can sneak in on the conversation.

MAVIS
I was working on a project for school.

TRAVIS
With who?

MAVIS
Andre and Sadiq.

MARCUS slips and falls down by the trash. Family stares, Then-

TRAVIS
Sadiq? That little punk I caught sneaking in through the dog door?

Travis approaches Mavis. Travis reaches in his front pocket and pulls out a cigarette and lighter. The lights the cigarette and takes a drag. Mavis looks up, jaw clenched.

TRAVIS
I warned you about that boy, didn’t I? You looked right in my face and said you didn’t know him.

MAVIS
I didn’t! He goes to school with me and we got assigned—

TRAVIS
And to think I was actually thinking about Columbia. How can I trust you, Mavis? (To Nadine)I’ll be in the car.

Marcus walks through the kitchen and laughs in Mavis face.

MARCUS
WHOO- HA Got you all in check!

He heads into the living room.

NADINE
Why didn’t you tell him you were working with that boy?

MAVIS
Cause I knew he would act like this. Mama, how is he going to decide where I go to college?

NADINE
He didn’t decide, Mavis.

MAVIS
Didn’t you hear him? He just did!

NADINE
Do you know Travis loves you, Mavis? He brags about you to you. He thinks you walk on water.

MAVIS
He thinks he walks on water. He tries to control everyone.

NADINE
Oh so you’re saying he controls me too? Is that what you’re saying?

MAVIS
That’s not what I meant.

NADINE
Then what did you mean? (beat)Nothing is more important to me than your education, Mavis.(To MARCUS OS) Marcus, come on boy,I’m ready to go. Your daddy’s in the car. Get of that phone.

Nadine Puts the Tupperware packages into the shopping bag and grabs her purse. Eyes Mavis’ grapefruit.

NADINE
I’m running a plate to your grandmother. And then we’re going to your Uncle Leroy’s for a card game. Do you want to come?

MAVIS
No.

NADINE
There are some red beans and rice in the refrigerator.

Nadine kisses her daughter on the head.

NADINE
We’ll be back around eleven.

Nadine leaves, and Mavis hears the car pulls out of the garage. Mavis sticks the fork into the grapefruit takes a bite then frowns. She sighs and stabs it with the fork.

LIVING ROOM
TV is on. Mavis flicks the television on with a remote. Barbie doll looking chick on TV with a bikini is humping her bodyshaper.

INFOMERCIAL BARBIE
(ON TELEVISION) Want to be the picture of perfection? Try Body Shape. Shape, Shape, Shape your way to sexier buns and abs.

Mavis runs her fingers across her abs and pinches them. She turns the television on mute and looks around. She then picks up a copy of Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who have considered Suicide when the Rainbow is Enuff. The doorbell rings. Mavis gets up and looks through the peephole. It is Sadiq. MAVIS pats her hair, straightens her shirt before opening the door. SADIQ stands there, dreads sparkling in the sun, his bike perched against the stairs.

SADIQ
I saw your pops drive off. You get in trouble?

MAVIS nods somberly.

Sadiq pulls out an envelope out of his pocket. He hands it Mavis. Mavis looks to him quizzically then opens it. There are several poems.

SADIQ
I finally got some work done.

Quiet, then---
Mavis opens the door and leads Sadiq inside. She closes the door behind them. Sadiq looks around absorbing everything. They stand inside awkwardly silent for a minute. He picks up the book off the table and flips to the page she was on.

SADIQ
She gotta crazy name.

MAVIS
It means one who comes with her own things. The story’s about this woman named Crystal. She has two kids by this dude she’s been with since she was fifteen, but she won’t marry him.

SADIQ
Why she want kids by him then?

MAVIS
What makes you think she wanted them?

Sadiq sets the book down.
SADIQ
But they were in love right? You only go crazy when it’s love.

MAVIS
After she says she won’t marry him he drops her kids out the window. If that’s what you call love, then yeah I guess he did.

SADIQ
Oh. That dinner?

MAVIS
I’m on a diet.

SADIQ
Why?

Mavis pats her backside and then picks the plate up off the table.

SADIQ
(low) Looks alriight to me.

MAVIS
I’m gonna put this in the kitchen. You want something?

SADIQ
Naw I’m cool.

Mavis EXITS to the kitchen. Sadiq sits on the end of couch. A looming picture of Travis that stares at him forebodingly. Mavis reenters the room. He turns and looks at her.

MAVIS
What are you looking at?

SADIQ
You.

MAVIS
Why?

SADIQ
Can’t I look at you?

MAVIS
I guess.

Mavis shyly walks by Sadiq and sits opposite him on the couch and pretends to watch TV. Sadiq looks around. In the corner of the room is a record player a top an oak shelf. Sadiq gets up and opens the bottom of the cabinet. He leafs through a few records.

SADIQ
Earth Wind and Fire. The Isleys. The Dramatics. Tina Marie. Your dad was a Tina fan, huh?

MAVIS
Yeah.

Sadiq finds the record he’s looking for and grins wickedly. He puts on Prince’s version of “Do Me Baby”.

MAVIS
What?

SADIQ
Why you so stiff?

MAVIS
I’m not.

SADIQ
Show me.

MAVIS approaches Sadiq. He pulls her close, and they dance. The music overcomes them and Sadiq slides his hands over her the top of the curve of her behind. Mavis leans into his chest. The gesture startles him and he becomes uneasy.

INT. MARCUS’ ROOM

Mavis removes some condoms from Marcus’s drawer.

INT. MAVIS’ ROOM

Sadiq is sitting on the bed. Mavis stands.

MAVIS
I never been with anybody. I mean, I’ve done stuff but I’ve never...

SADIQ
Look, Mavis, I can go home now and it will still be cool. You don’t gotta do anything you don’t wanna.

MAVIS
What if I want to?

Mavis climbs on top of him. They continue kissing then fumble with the condom. Sadiq tries awkwardly to push in missionary style. When it becomes clear that it is uncomfortable for Mavis, he pulls out and heads down south. Mavis' HAND shakes gently.

INT. St. John's AME Church

Sister Doright’s hand shakes. Bible study. Small group of men and woman, most older. Mavis sits next to Nadine, Travis and Marcus --looking extremely bored and irritated. Reverend Lee, the female pastor sits in the center. Sister Doright a middle aged and fairly attractive woman eyes Travis.

REVEREND LEE
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be for thou husband and he shall rule over thee. Then in verse twenty it says," And Adam's wife was called Eve because she was the mother of all living." So what does this mean?

No answers.

REVEREND LEE
Sister Doright?

SISTER DORIGHT
The Lord has a powerful will, and we not supposed to give into the wicked urges of the flesh and disobey like Eve.The temptation wasn't the fruit. Eve didn't eat the fruit and become sinful, she was sinful because she chose to disobey God's law. Man obeys God's law, woman obeys man, children obey their parents. But of course our desire for what is wicked causes us to be blind to God's perfect order.

TRAVIS
Now that is an interpretation!

Mavis scrowls. Nadine pinches her. Travis glares.

REVEREND LEE
Well, that is one idea. Are there others? Sister Mavis? You mighty quiet over there.

MAVIS
They were only perfect because they hadn't done nothing yet. Why punish them for not knowing?

TRAVIS
Because you don't question God.

MAVIS
God wants weak minded believers?

Reverend Lee
There is nothing wrong with having questions, Mavis. God accepts questions. The book of Job is all about why bad things happen to good people. What’s on your heart?

MAVIS
I just wonder, why is Eve always blamed as the only one responsible for the fall of man? Why does she have to obey Adam for the rest of her life, when he's just as bad as she is?

SISTER DORIGHT
The Bible directs us Sister Mavis; wives submit to your husbands.

Reverend Lee
It also says husbands love your wives as Christ loved the Church.

SISTER DORIGHT
I understand that Reverend Lee, but like it or not there is a divine order, and we as Christians are obligated to follow it. Nobody made this up. If you love God you must do what He wants.

MAVIS
And how do you know what He wants?

NADINE
Mavis! I'm sorry, Reverend Lee.

PASTOR DORIGHT
No, it's alright. Mavis, I believe that God still speaks to us in many ways. He speaks to us through His word. He speaks to us through circumstances in our lives. He speaks to us through other people. Our faith as Christians is about believing that God hears, and acts.

MAVIS
How do you know if you have faith?

Reverend Lee
How do you know if you love someone? We make a choice to believe.

INT. THE SPOON

Mavis is helping Nikki hang a Banner that says “Poetry Night” across the stage of the SPOON. They hang the banner, and plop down on the stage. Mavis smiles to herself.

NIKKI
Bernie kept asking me if I needed Xavier’s help. Who does he think has been planning events? You and me basically run the after school program. Do you know Xavier is getting 15 dollars an hour?
We’ve been working here as youth workers for the past five summers, doing all the work, Bernie is over here violating child labor law and he’s getting fifteen an hour!

MAVIS
That’s why I gotta leave for a minute. Sometimes I feel like I gotta get away from here to come back. It will be ours though one day, Nikki.

MAVIS picks up Assata Shakur’s autobiography off the stage and reads her poem , “Affirmation,” aloud.

MAVIS
“And, if I know anything at all, it’s that a wall is just a wall and nothing more at all. It can be broken down.”

SADIQ walks past, smiles and heads over to talk to Xavier.

NIKKI
Look atcha. You’re pitiful.

MAVIS
I’m acting like a punk.

NIKKI
What went down at the park?

MAVIS
We kissed.

NIKKI
I know that, fool.

MAVIS
We did it.

NIKKI
What “it”?

MAVIS
“It,” it.

NIKKI
Wait, Wait, Wait. You did “what” where?

MAVIS
“It.” At my house.

NIKKI
How he get in your house?

MAVIS
The door, Nikki.

NIKKI
How you gonna go from just messing around with Andre to getting broke off?

MAVIS
He ain’t Andre, trust me.

NIKKI
Oooooh!

MAVIS
I wanted him to, alright?

NIKKI
Be careful, Mavis.

MAVIS
I was. I mean we were. I guess…

NIKKI
Guess or know?

MAVIS

We were careful.

NIKKI
Well I’m glad it wasn’t Andre. I told you about him.

MAVIS
Sadiq isn’t like that. He’s sweet.

NIKKI
You sound like you’re in love.

MAVIS
Do you know how many women’s lives have been ruined by what they thought was love? Shoot, love is like crack. It makes you stupid but you keep on hitting it.

NIKKI
Remember that ten years from now when you have six kids and a station wagon.

MAVIS
First of all, I would never drive a station wagon. Secondly, I don’t want to be like my mama, playing herself down so my daddy can feel big. No love, no kids, no rings.

NIKKI
So what happens when your dad finds out?

MAVIS
He won’t. And if he does I’m graduating. What can he do?

INT. TRAVIS’ AND NADINE’S BED - NIGHT

Nadine is turned over away from Travis. Travis is reading a book about the civil rights movement.

NADINE
Travis.

TRAVIS
Don’t even start, Nadine. I know what you’re about to say before you open your mouth.

NADINE
You read minds now too?

Nadine turns over and sits up. She takes the book from Travis.

NADINE
Travis this has got to stop. The girl wants to go to school. Stop punishing her for what happened to you.

TRAVIS
I’m not punishing her. My father worked 35 years for the plant. He trained half the people in that place, and I watched him, die every day, promotion after promotion passing him by. I never thought that twenty-five years later I would be my father.

NADINE
Giving them things doesn’t make you a man, Travis.

TRAVIS
Don’t hurt, though does it? Don’t you think I know it bothers you that after almost twenty years of marriage you got a man who can’t even pay a light bill?

NADINE
It bothers me that after twenty years of marriage you still don’t know me.

Nadine cuts the light and turns over.

INT. CLASSROOM

MR. VARGAS
I reviewed the videos. Please pick up your grades before you leave.

Mavis waits in line to get their paper. Sadiq watches from the desk, infatuated. AQUILA strolls past Sadiq, and gives him a once over.

AQUILA
Guess that’s why you haven’t called me.

SADIQ ignores her. AQUILA watches MAVIS who is talking with the teacher.

AQUILA
Won’t last. I can tell her. Niggas don’t know nothing about love.

MAVIS approaches them hearing the last part of Aquila’s statement. AQUILA smiles and walks on. Mavis is crushed.

SADIQ
What did we get?

MAVIS
“A.” I gotta go.

She leaves. Sadiq starts after her but Mr. VARGAS motions him to the desk.

MR. VARGAS
Did you write this?

SADIQ
Yeah.

Mr. VARGAS
I looked over your grades, which were promising until sophomore year. Seems to me if you came to class a little more you’d be good student. Did you apply for college?

SADIQ
I got messed up for awhile. I’ll probably go to a JC.

MR.VARGAS
You ever read about the East Los Angeles Blowouts? (OFF SADIQ’s NOD) I was reading William Faulkner in the shop classes I was programmed into. I ended up going to a JC and transferring. If you’re willing to do some back reading, I think I can help you with your English teacher.

MR. VARGAS extends his hand to Sadiq. Sadiq takes it.

EXT. PARK
Xavier, Nigel and Sadiq are playing basketball. Xavier makes the final point.

XAVIER
What now! Two against one and I still whupped y’all non-coordinated punk musician asses.

SADIQ
It’s called a lucky shot.

XAVIER
It’s called you’re weak!

Nigel and Sadiq plop down on the ground.

NIGEL
Alright so you whupped us. What you want? A cookie?

Xavier sits next to them.

XAVIER
Bow down! You are in the presence of greatness.

Nigel
Whatever. Diq, YaYa, Mike and me been talking. When you first started playing with us it was only a temporary thing, but we want you with Elevated. Permanently.

SADIQ
What?

NIGEL
Did I stutter? It’s time, man. Got some joints lined up this summer.

Nigel sees a girl running on the track.

NIGEL
I love me some sistas that be thick in the thighs. And the booty? Oh my God, can I just pay reverence to it? Make a nigga want to worship it.

XAVIER
She alright. Too dark though.

NIGEL
See Diq? It is always the one hollering about black is beautiful that don’t like black women.

XAVIER
Black is beautiful. I just prefer my woman not be as black as my shoe.

NIGEL
School him, Diq.

SADIQ
Huh?

NIGEL
Wha?!? Look atcha. That girl Mavis got you caught up.

XAVIER
Nikki’s girl, Mavis? Aw man, you hit that?
You got a lot to learn, Dragonfly. Mavis is gonna be a nice piece, no doubt, but you can’t handle that. You’d have to break her in.

SADIQ
Maybe I don’t need to.

XAVIER
Then she’s gonna break you. You act like you the one wearing the panties.

NIGEL
Diq, don’t listen to this fool.

Sadiq is quiet. He feels smaller and smaller as they talk.

XAVIER
He needs to listen to me, and stop acting soft. History repeats itself. Aquila had my boy all out, buying that girl shoes, writing her songs. Do you know this fool cried when she dropped him?

NIGEL
And? Last time you had a girl Chubb Rock had a hit.

XAVIER
I’m just saying, Diq, you’re a king. I know you sensitive, but stand up like a man.

QUICK FLASHBACK-FIST
Sadiq getting punched on the schoolyard. RED Blood. Tears. The word bitch loud and ominous. The Flashback ends.

Sadiq pushes Xavier. Xavier stands up and pushes him back, and Sadiq falls to the ground. A few passerbys laugh. Nigel tries to help Sadiq up, but Sadiq walks off.

XAVIER
I’m trying to help you out, ‘lil punk!

Nigel shakes his head at Xavier and gets up and follows Sadiq.

INT. BUS PORT
Mavis Sadiq is sprawled in between Mavis’ legs they sit on the bench under the bus port. Mavis plays with his hair. Sadiq reads her poetry book.

MAVIS
Did you love her?

SADIQ
What kinda question is that?

MAVIS
Simple. Either you did or you didn’t.

SADIQ
I don’t know.

MAVIS
So you hit it and don’t even know?

SADIQ
Like you and Andre?

MAVIS
Don’t change the subject.

Sadiq sits up and tickling her side and hugging her playfully. She laughs.
SADIQ
You better tell your boy Andre this here is mine.

MAVIS
You’re getting beside yourself, fool.

Sadiq picks up her poetry book and opens it again.

SADIQ
I saw you reading a poem in some class one day before the Fest. I hadn’t been to class in so long I ain’t had no class. But your voice, it made me stop. I thought to myself now she’s beautiful.

MAVIS
I’m not beautiful.

SADIQ
You stand up for what you believe. That’s beautiful.

MAVIS
I applied to Columbia.

SADIQ
Columbia?

MAVIS
Nobody knows. I don’t know if I’m going to go, or if I got in.

The bus pulls up, Mavis looks away.

EXT. STREET
Sadiq and Nigel walk down the street and sees his brother CORY walking closely with another man. Cory waves to Sadiq, and hugs him. Sadiq barely returns the hug.

CORY
Sadiq! Don’t you know how to pick up a phone? This is Jermaine.

Jermaine outstretches his hand. Sadiq looks at him and gives him a half a pound.

SADIQ
Well, I gotta go. Later.

Sadiq starts walking. Nigel follows.

Nigel
Who was that?

SADIQ
Nobody.

EXT. FREEWAY

Sadiq and Mavis are in the car driving down the freeway taking in California’s scenery.

(VO)
SADIQ
Let’s get out of the city.

MAVIS
Where?

INT. MONTEREY BAY AQUARIAM — FISHTANK
SMALL KIDS lean against the side of a fish tank filled with beautiful pink Sea Anemones and clown fish in a tank. MAVIS presses her face against the glass as well, and motions for SADIQ to join her.

SADIQ
Think they miss the ocean?

MAVIS
Wouldn’t you?

SADIQ
You ever hear the story of Isaac and Ishmael? Abraham and Sarah were old they had no kids. Now God, He told them that he was going to bless them with a child, and that Abraham’s seed would be like the sands by sea, but they got tired of waiting. Sarah had this maidservant, Hagar.

So Abraham hit that. Hagar gets pregnant names the kid Ishmael. Jealousy sets in and Hagar and Sarah start beefing. So God tells Abraham that Sarah is gonna get pregnant and they are going to have a son, Isaac. He said he would hook Ishmael up with all kinds stuff, but Isaac would inherit God’s covenant.

MAVIS
You read the bible?

SADIQ
I can read, Mavis. (beat)That story always reminds me of and my brother.
My dad didn’t want any more kids after Cory. He told me once flat out he thinks I’m not his.

MAVIS
What does your mama say?

SADIQ
They had problems. Not like Pops was an angel either. One day Pops caught Cory in the bathroom with a dude. That was the last time they saw each other. I hit a tree. You find out who really is cool with you. Got into a lot of fights. Lost, mostly.

MAVIS runs her hand across his face.

MAVIS
Maybe it’s time to stop fighting.

MAVIS takes his hand and squeezes it. Sadiq hugs her and holds her hips. Mavis flinches and moves his hands.

SADIQ
Why won’t you let me touch you?

Mavis nervously smooths her hips. Sadiq touches them gently. Looks up at her again.

SADIQ
I don’t want you to get hurt.

MAVIS
Then don’t hurt me.

EXT. LA FRONTERA HIGH

MAVIS and NIKKI are headed toward the bus when a Pathfinder pulls up along side her. Andre is the driver.

ANDRE
Hey girl, I been calling you.

NIKKI
She’s not a dog.

ANDRE
I wasn’t talking to you, Nicole.

MAVIS
I’m telling Mr. Vargas that you didn’t do any of the work.

ANDRE
Look, Mavis don’t be like that. Get in for a second.

Mavis looks hesitates then,…

MAVIS
I’ll catch up with you later, Nikki.

NIKKI
Alright.

Mavis gets in the car. Andre grins from ear to ear.

MAVIS
What?

ANDRE
How come you don’t ever wear you hair down? (Noticing Mavis disapproval) Alright, Alright. I told Mr. Vargas to take me off the project. I’m going to do one by myself. He’s gonna take some points off my grade.

MAVIS
What’s the catch?

ANDRE
Ain’t no catch.

MAVIS
With you there’s always a catch.

ANDRE
You’re a good influence on me.

Mavis laughs

ANDRE
Finally made you smile. I wanted to ask you something.

MAVIS
Two minutes Andre.

ANDRE
You know I’ve been thinking about what you said, and you know you’re right. I know I messed up with you trying to be the player. You’re a smart, you’re hella sexy and you’re cool. You’ve got fire, but I like that though. Even though you won’t admit it, I know that you I can handle you.

MAVIS
Andre…

ANDRE
No, let me finish. Since the first day of school, I know you’ve been straight when I wasn’t. Even though I don’t act like it I respect the fact that you ain’t give me none. This is our senior year, baby girl. It’s time to do things right. I want you to go with me to the ball.

MAVIS
Andre…

ANDRE
You got somebody else?

MAVIS
Well, yeah.

ANDRE
Okay. Well think about it.

Mavis shakes her head and leaves the car. From a distance, Sadiq sees.

INT. MAVIS’ BEDROOM

Mavis wakes up, Hair all over the head looking tore up. Gets up because her window is open. On her window sill is an orchid. MAVIS smiles.

EXT. STREET
MAVIS walks down the street by the Church, writing while she’s walking. Reverend Lee is watering the garden. She smiles when she sees Mavis pass.

Reverend Lee
Hello there, Mavis.

MAVIS
What you doing?

REVEREND LEE
Just tending to these flowers. We have a gardner, but these seem to do better when they get special care.

MAVIS smiles, half heartedly.

REVEREND LEE
Everything alright, dear?

MAVIS
Reverend Lee do you ever think that God has stopped listening to you?

REVEREND LEE
Yes, in the past I did. But usually I had stopped listening to God. You have to be still to hear.

MAVIS
Well, I gotta go. Thanks.

MAVIS hurries off.

INT. BATHROOM - TOILET BOWL
MAVIS throws up. She stands up realizing why.

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL
Sign reads: Congratulations Seniors!

EXT. BASEBALLFIELD — DAY
Mavis and Nikki are sitting quietly. They hold each other.

EXT. SADIQ’S HOUSE - NIGHT
MAVIS knocks on the door. After a moment SADIQ answers.

MAVIS
We need to talk. Close the door.

Sadiq closes the door and they start down the street. They walk away from the porch out of earshot. A moment of digestion, then fast words. Sadiq yells. Mavis walks away abruptly.

INT. WAITING ROOM
Women sit in a line, Mavis on the end. Clock ticks. Next to Mavis is a twelve-year-old girl, with a pony tail in her hair. A heavy set elderly lady sits with her. The girl’s leg shakes. A young blonde sits to her left. A Latina woman sits in the far corner.

WHISPERING VOICES GETTING PROGRESSIVELY LOUDER

This is the right thing really
I can’t have another one.
I’m in college.
I’m in the sixth grade.
I’m not even getting benefits.
My grandma can’t take care of no baby.
He said he’d be here.
He said he wouldn’t stick it in.
He said I was pretty.
I don’t want to be alone.
How am I going to get home?
How could he do this to me?
He raped me.

MAVIS gets up and runs out the office.

INT. MAVIS’S ROOM - NIGHT
It’s dark. Mavis stares at her collage on the wall in silence. The phone rings, and she doesn’t answer. The machine picks up.
SADIQ
(V.O.)
Mavis. Mavis! I know you’re there. Pick up.

A sigh then a click. MAVIS turns over.

INT. CLASS
Mavis fills out college applications. Board says “Senior Ball tickets on Sale.” Mavis eyes Sadiq’s desk. Aquila sits on his lap and tussles a piece of his hair. Andre sits on Mavis’ desk and makes a corny seductive face. Mavis reluctantly cracks a smile. Sadiq sees.

INT. MAVIS’ ROOM

Nadine is pinning Mavis’ prom dress. It is a pale blue. Nadine stands back. Everything is proper but the smile.

NADINE
Is everything alright, Mavis?

MAVIS
Yeah, mama.

DOWNSTAIRS

MAVIS walks down the stairs. TRAVIS and MARCUS on the couch. Silence.

DOORBELL RINGS. TRAVIS GETS THE DOOR. NIKKI and her date Andre, Nikki and her date Delores and CARLOS, are at the door, looking nice. Andre greets Mavis with a kiss on the cheek. Nadine gets her camera.

She takes a picture with all of them.
ABRUPT CUT

INT. HOTEL PROM — PICTURE BOOTH

NIKKI and DATE take a picture together. After the flash she walks away to Mavis who is standing in the wings. She sees Sadiq there at a table alone, then Aquila comes over. Sadiq catches her eye.

NIKKI
Save me. He’s been talking the whole night with stank breath. If Javon was acting right I would’ve took him. At least he knows what a tic tac is. What about you?

MAVIS
Andre’s outside playing craps.

Sadiq approaches them.

NIKKI
I’m gonna get something to drink.(Shoots daggers at Sadiq) You let me know if you need me.

NIKKI leaves them. Sadiq bounces around awkwardly, then--

SADIQ
How are you gonna show up here with Andre?

MAVIS
I didn’t feel like coming alone!

SADIQ
You think you can punk me by coming here with that nigga? So what, is this his baby now, too?

Mavis face hardens. She storms through people booty grinding. Sadiq follows her to the terrace of the hotel pushing aside butts. Moon out.

SADIQ
Mavis! Slow down! I didn’t mean that, okay?

MAVIS
Go find Aquila!

SADIQ
If this is about her why am I standing here talking to you, huh? I left fifteen messages last month. You didn’t return one. First Nikki says you having it, then she says you might not. Don’t I deserve to know something?

Mavis leans against the terrace and looks out at the stars.

MAVIS
I can’t do it. I know what it is like to feel unwanted, Sadiq. I don’t even know if I’ll have a place to stay.

SADIQ
You got a place.

Mavis spins around.

MAVIS
What?

SADIQ
After graduation. I got a job, at the airport. Nigel is lending me the money. I went looking for a place today.

MAVIS
This is not the 1950’s where you marry your girl and everything is cool. What about music, huh? Don’t start making promises you won’t keep, so you can blame me for making them. You don’t want --

SADIQ
I want you!

Both are surprised. The music is playing. Mavis leans into Sadiq and he holds her as they listen to the music from inside.

EXT. CHAMP’S HOME

EXT. MAILBOX--MORNING
TRAVIS takes in the mail. He takes out a big, thick, white envelope.

INT. LIVING ROOM.
Travis is sitting on the couch in his work clothes smoking and watching TV.

MAYOR
There are some people who think that the progress this city has made is to be feared. I say it is to be embraced.

RESIDENT
If the mayor really thinks that people being homeless is progress he has a lot more to worry about than re-election. We are going to keep fighting for a living wage and rent control.

Travis flicks the TV off. MAVIS lets herself into the house.

TRAVIS
Who told you to apply for Columbia?

MAVIS
You opened my mail?

TRAVIS
It comes to my house. I already told you if you plan on going somewhere besides Cal, find somebody else to pay for it.

MAVIS
Fine.

MAVIS goes into the kitchen and opens up the storage closet where the washer is kept. A carton of milk on the cabinet, and a mixing bowl. Mavis gets her book bag out the corner and starts shoving stuff into it. TRAVIS follows her.

TRAVIS
You leave with what you came here with.

TRAVIS snatches the bag from her. Nadine and Marcus come into the kitchen.

NADINE
What is going on?

MAVIS
You got your wish! I’m not going to Columbia.

NADINE
What?

MAVIS
I’m pregnant.

TRAVIS
Who is it?

MAVIS
Sadiq.

TRAVIS picks up the bag of clothes and slings it across the kitchen. It crashes into some dishes shattering them.

NADINE
Travis, stop!

TRAVIS
(TO NADINE) I told you! If you hadn’t let the girl get away with murder she wouldn’t be in this mess!

MARCUS
Don’t talk to my mama like that!

TRAVIS
You shut your mouth!

Mavis starts towards the door and Nadine yanks her back.

NADINE
I will kick your pregnant behind if you walk out that door. (TO TRAVIS) You are not going run this child out this house. She’s not the first girl who’s not a woman to have a baby by a boy who’s not a man, and she won’t be the last. If you don’t like it, you leave!

TRAVIS
Apple don't fall far from the tree, huh? (To Mavis) That boy ain’t ready to be no daddy and he will hate you for making him one. No man wants to be held back.

Mavis snatches her arm away from her mother and runs out the door.

TRAVIS
Nadine.

NADINE
Maybe I should get rid of all the things that have been holding me back.

She exits door. Marcus follows. Travis is alone. He picks up the milk carton and slings it across the wall. Milk slides down.

INT. NIKKI’s HOUSE

SADIQ
Ma, this is why I didn’t want to tell you.

ANGIE
I’ve been wiping your snotty nose for eighteen years and now you think you can tell me you’re ready for this.

SADIQ
Don’t got no choice but to be ready.

Angie stops and sighs.
ANGIE
Your report card came. It was the first one in three years that didn’t have a D or an F. (beat) Am I supposed to take care of this baby?

SADIQ
I’m not asking y’all for nothing.

REGGIE
It’s yours right?

SADIQ
How you even gonna ask me that? She was a virgin.

REGGIE
Was. I expected better of you.

SADIQ
I don’t need no lectures, alright. Your expectations of me were never too high anyway.

REGGIE
Don’t matter what I expect anymore, does it?

Sadiq stands.

SADIQ
So was my mama a virgin when you married her?

Angie drops the drops and breaks a bowl.

REGGIE
What?

SADIQ
Glad I’m not a woman. Play your girl she takes you back. She plays you and if you take her back you never let her forget it.

REGGIE
I raised you didn’t I?

ANGIE
Shut up, both of you! (To Sadiq) Don’t speak on what you don’t know!

SADIQ
What about what he don’t know, mama? All my life I’ve waited for that man to give me something, anything! I’ll tell you one thing. My son, won’t have to wait.

SADIQ
Don’t get salty. Brought you some. How’s my son?

MAVIS
Daughter. And she’s making me fat. Wanna feel?

SADIQ walks over to her and lifts her shirt. He feels her protruding belly and smiles.

SADIQ
You go to the doctor?

MAVIS
Free clinic.

SADIQ
You’re not as big as you should be. I want you to cut back on your hours.

MAVIS
Do you want us to go on GA, too?

SADIQ
I gotta get up early.

He falls on the couch.

INT. APARTMENT—DAY
MAVIS is scrubbing the floor. She puts her hand unsuspectingly into a pile of rat droppings. She quickly gets up and washes her hands. A Doorknocker. It is NADINE. She has bags in her hands. A PAUSE.

NADINE takes the food out of the bags and puts it in the fridge.
NADINE

NADINE
I knew before you did.

MAVIS
I have a home.

TRAVIS
You have a place to stay. It’s not a home. (PAUSE) Mavis, I’m sorry.

MAVIS
Why? You were right.

TRAVIS
No Mavis. He shouldn’t have had you out there.

MAVIS
I wanted to be there, Daddy.

TRAVIS
But Mavis--

MAVIS
Do you know what they said to me when I came in here? They said, It could’ve been anything. It could have been anything that caused it. But I know it is not just anything.

SADIQ
Will it?

NIGEL
I got you Diq. Money, whatever, I got you.

SADIQ
My guitar. Sell it. Get what you can. Do you know next week I may not have a job? Pawned some of the equipment. Not even enough to make it until the end of the month. I see why brothers get into the dope game.

NIGEL
You don’t mean that, Diq. What about your folks?

SADIQ
What about them? They’re struggling now.

NIGEL
Your girl needs time. Maybe you should think about, you know, her going home.

SADIQ
She ain’t doing that. She won’t say so but she blames me.

Sadiq sets the globe down, and stares at it.

SADIQ
Remember when I tried out for football? My dad was so juiced, he came to practice. Then coach had Andre passing to me. Every time he passed the ball to me I fumbled.(beat, then) It was a girl. I never got a chance to even think about what she would look like or nothing. She was just coming. Now she’s not. It’s like I had the world in my hands, and I fumbled.

INT. LIVING ROOM — DAY
Mavis sits in the corner of the couch watching television, looking smaller and drawn. Sadiq sits in the opposite corner. Destiny sleeps between them. Suddenly Sadiq gets up and shuts the television off.

SADIQ
I can’t do this no more, Mav. (beat)I was gonna ask you this before when the time was right. But there is never gonna be no right time.

He gets down on one knee and pulls a small silver ring out his pocket. He takes her hand and slips the ring on her finger.

SADIQ
I know I don’t have anything to offer you but one day I will.

MAVIS
Sadiq, you know--

SADIQ
I got hook up in Seattle. You can go to school.

MAVIS
You know I can’t.

Beat, then Sadiq gets up, face wounded.

SADIQ
You won’t. Why don’t you just say it?

MAVIS
Say what?

SADIQ
You blame me.

MAVIS
This is a stupid conversation.

SADIQ
Answer the question! You blame me!

MAVIS
I don’t know! Okay? I don’t know. Maybe I blame me. And you know what? None of that is going to change anything, Sadiq.

Sadiq walks picks up the phone.

MAVIS
Sadiq I know it wasn’t your fault. I just-

SADIQ
Call your pops.

MAVIS

SADIQ
I swear to God if you don’t pick up the phone now and tell him to come and get you I’m gonna lose it.

MAVIS
I’m not calling him.

SADIQ
Alright, then.

Sadiq picks up the phone and starts dialing.

MAVIS
What are you doing?

SADIQ
This is Sadiq. Mavis wants y’all to come and get her. You better come now.

He slams the phone down. He starts picking up some clothes and tossing them into a gym bag.

MAVIS
Who do you think you are, calling my Daddy?

SADIQ
I’ll come through to get my stuff later.

MAVIS

REPORTER
Mayor what do you say to opponents who claim your administration hasn’t done enough to create affordable housing?

Well, Jerry that is something I think we’ve worked hard on. People must understand that we must attract business to this city to grow our economy. Just last week I was in Silicon Valley…

INT. CHAMP’S KITCHEN

MARCUS
Mavis could you pass the hot sauce?

MAVIS passes the sauce.

TRAVIS
I think you need a change of scenery.

MAVIS
What?

TRAVIS
You know, look out your window and see something different. Columbia will still wants you.

NADINE
You have two weeks. You could still get housing.

MAVIS
Why now?

TRAVIS
You deserve to go. Your call.

MAVIS

CORY
Was she was supposed to wait around?

SADIQ
I don’t know.

CORY
That’s foul.

SADIQ
Don’t you think I know that?

CORY
Your game, you should know.

SADIQ
Whatever.

CORY
Punk.

SADIQ
Stop the car.

Cory pulls the car over and Sadiq gets out, then Cory. Sadiq throws up his arms, ready to fight.

SADIQ
We can go right now!

Bravado is interrupted. He throws up by the side of the road. Cory gets out. He leans against the car.

CORY
Liquor still talking for you?

SADIQ
No, it is all me, Cory!

CORY
Granny said you’d be the only one who wouldn’t cry. Life hurts, don’t it?

Sadiq leans over and throws up again. Silence then--

CORY
You’re selfish.

SADIQ
If she would’ve done what I told her it never would’ve happened!

CORY
There it is!

SADIQ
I got my beat downs everyday of you! I could never do anything right for Pop, but you, everything you ever did was alright!

CORY
Oh so you think you’ve got all the answers, huh? You know everything, right?

SADIQ
Yeah, I do!

CORY
Then I guess you know how it feels to put a gun in your mouth because your own father treats you like a person off the street? You weren’t the only one!

Cory gets into the car slamming the door. Sadiq follows. Cory doesn’t look at him.

SADIQ
Why didn’t you tell me?

CORY
Would it have made a difference?

Sadiq sinks back into the seat and sighs, Looking out the window in the opposite direction. Tears.

SADIQ

ANDRE
I’m so sorry Mrs. Champ. Let me know if is there anything else I can do.

The waiter enters.

WAITER
May I take your order?

MAVIS
Still looking.

ANDRE
Then can we have the sautéed rosemary chicken, light butter for the lady.

WAITER
Any wine with that, Mr. Ridge?

ANDRE
Whatever you recommend.

The food was served and the wine glasses are half empty. Andre’s plate is clean, Mavis’ plate is picked over.

ANDRE
Why hasn’t anybody gotten a hold of you yet, girl?

MAVIS
I don’t know.

ANDRE
You know you just ain’t telling. Now there’s the smile that had me broke up back in high school. Using all those big words on a nigga. Ruined me for other women.

MAVIS
Yeah right. You probably need a catcher’s mitt.

ANDRE
Well, you know… yeah. But after awhile it gets old.

MAVIS
What?

ANDRE
Time moves on, Mavis. Believe it or not I’m not a little scrub chasing panties anymore. It took some growing up but I realized I need somebody I can trust. Somebody to be the mother of my kids. A queen. Perfection.

MAVIS
There are no perfect women.

ANDRE
You were always were to me.

SADIQ
Well I heard about her pops. Is she in?

ANDRE
Maybe. But she won’t wanna see you.

Andre shuts off the game and cuts him off.

SADIQ

ANDRE
Since I put the ring on her finger.

Sadiq laughs.

ANDRE
Something sound funny, dog?

SADIQ
Mavis marrying you.

Andre steps to Sadiq.

ANDRE
I’m the one hittin’ it. That sound better?

SADIQ
Whoa, you need to back up, Big man, it ain’t game time.

ANDRE
I don’t play games with niggas out of my league.

SADIQ
And Mavis is in your league? Tell me this then, playa, cause I’m curious. Why’d she drop you if you roll like that? I know Mavis. She would never have any man checking, ‘specially you.

O.S.
MAVIS
Is that Nikki, Dre? Tell her I’ll be out after I finish showering.

ANDRE
How about a little quiet time here. Write me some sexy poems.

MAVIS takes some peanuts off the counter and starts eating them. Andre gets up and takes them out of her hand.

ANDRE
Don't eat those. They're fattening. You wanna ruin your training?

MAVIS
I need some time alone.

ANDRE
I thought we were going to get started on our project.

MAVIS
I told you I’m not ready.

ANDRE
Then when?

Mavis is quiet.

ANDRE
I’m sorry, baby. I know you need some time to think about it. Take the keys to the house. The deal is almost finalized, just some formalities. I’ll be here when you get back.

MAVIS picks they keys up and puts them in her pocket. Then she walks out the door. After she leaves ANDRE Kicks his feet up on the bed and smiles.

Mavis walks past the Africana. She doesn't see Sadiq who is standing by a red truck unloading music equipment with another man. Sadiq does a double take and leaps off the truck leaving his loading partner behind and rushes toward Mavis.

SADIQ
Mavis! How you gon’ walk past me like I'm a crack fiend?

MAVIS
I didn't see you.

SADIQ
I'm sorry about your pops.

MAVIS
It’s not your fault.

They slow down in front of St. John’s and lean against the building.

SADIQ
Would you believe I’ve been going here sometimes? (smiles) You want to go get some coffee (eyes her frame) or some food? What they don’t let y’all eat when you’re talking to somebody on the team?

MAVIS
I can't talk long.

SADIQ
You still writing?

MAVIS
I kinda put all that on hold. I'm getting married.

SADIQ
Yeah, I came by.

MAVIS
When?

SADIQ
After your dad passed.

MAVIS
He didn't tell me.

SADIQ
Guess he didn't.

Mavis fiddles with her ring awkwardly. Feet of people walking by. Silence then,

MAVIS
He bought a house out here. He wants a family. Maybe I'll teach.

SADIQ
How you can you teach somebody to believe in something you gave up on?

MAVIS
I didn’t give up, I grew up.

SADIQ
Your ego got drop kicked. It happens. It happened to me. That doesn't mean that you slam the door on everything you believed in and never look back. You get up! That’s real.

MAVIS
Guess you know all about that, huh? Oh Lord, help me because here comes another Black man thinking he can save me from my reality! He thinks he’s the king of the world because he kept it "real”! I’ve spent my entire life getting kicked back in place by real brothas ,brothas who were trying to be real, brothas who didn’t know what real was! I never thought you’d be another one.

Mavis looks away. She is crying, gripping her purse tightly.

SADIQ
I guess I deserve that. (beat) Do you ever think about what she would look like? (another pause) You don’t know how much I wish I could take it all back, Mav. I don’t have the answers. But I know there are no answers in punishing yourself.

Sadiq takes the hand with the ring.

SADIQ
I'd be lying if I said I didn’t wish it was me. Just do me a favor. Don’t settle.

MAVIS
What do you know about that?

HE TOUCHES HER RIGHT EYE.

SADIQ
More than you think.

SADIQ walks away. Mavis watches.

INT. STEPS HOUSE
Mavis is sitting on the steps writing words, and crossing them out furiously. She sighs after a few minutes and throws the notebook across the room. It hits the floor with a resounding hollowness.

EXT. PARK
Old men play chess. Teenage boys try to holler at girls in cars with booming music. Little girls swinging on swings. Reverend Lee walks by. Recognition. She smiles at Mavis.

Reverend Lee
Mavis! It is so good to see you, dear.

MAVIS
Thank you, Reverend Lee.

Reverend Lee
I just finished speaking with your mother. She is a strong woman.

MAVIS
Yes, she is.

Reverend Lee examines Mavis.

Reverend Lee
Allow yourself time to greive, dear heart. (eyes the ring and touches Mavis’ hand) He’s very lucky.

MAVIS looks pained.

Reverend Lee
Mavis, I hope I’m not prying, but is everything alright?

MAVIS
Yes (begins crying) I mean I should be. I’m so sorry. This is embarrassing. I’m okay, really.

Reverend Lee
Your face tells on you. You know, Mavis unnamed pain is worse than a ghost. But the Lord has placed a strong spirit is in you. He wants you to know there is peace beyond this pain.

MAVIS
(shaking)I’ve made such a mess out of everything. I’m so sad. And angry. At God, at the world,--most of all at me. I feel like I’m trapped by a wall.

Reverend Lee
Then you must go through it like a wall. Through it and out of it! But you can’t do it alone. You’ve gotta trust that God will fight this battle with you.

Reverend Lee touches Mavis’ hands and she stops shaking.

Reverend Lee
In the end all we have is what we believe. Do you believe that God can heal your heart?

INT. HOTEL–NIGHT
Andre is sitting on the bed.

ANDRE
I called you.

Mavis doesn’t answer. She sets her purse on the nightstand. Finally,--

MAVIS
The view wasn’t as good as I thought.

ANDRE
Girl, you better stop playing with me. Where were you?

Mavis is silent. She begins to open her drawers and take out her clothes.

ANDRE
Answer me! Wh-what are you doing?

MAVIS
Leaving.

Andre pins Mavis against the wall. Mavis is scared. She realizes she cannot escape. Andre smiles, pulls her shirt and rips the top botton. It falls to the floor with a thud.

ANDRE
No you’re not.

Andre starts kissing her. Mavis cries. Andre pulls her dress up and spreads her legs. He kisses her neck. Noticing her wet tears, he looks up.

ANDRE
Don’t you want to have my babies?

Mavis kicks him in the nuts. Andre falls to the floor, pride wounded. Mavis picks up a letter opener off the dresser and stands over him.

MAVIS
Don’t make me kill you.

ANDRE
You were with him.

MAVIS
I’ve been living like this a day too long.

Mavis removes the ring and drops it on the floor next to him.

ANDRE
I treated you like a queen. You don’t deserve my ring, tramp.

MAVIS
You’re right. I deserve way better.

Mavis gets her purse and opens it. She puts the letter opener in her purse and then takes her keys out and places them on the table next to the door then walks out. Andre picks up the ring and heads for the door. He opens up the door where we see Mavis entering the glass elevator and throws the ring at her. MAVIS is being lowered down through the elevator.

INT. CLASSROOM — AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

RECORD PLAYER
A group of two boys and a girl singing the lead voice and dancing in rhythm. The little girl takes the lead. Mavis laughs as the other children clap.

CUT TO:
Children painting a bright mural on canvas.

NIKKI
ICE CREAM AND CAKE!!!

MAVIS
Alright I’ll see you guys later. I think Nikki has cake and ice cream outside for all of you who finished the booklist.

The KIDS run towards the door.

MAVIS
Walk!

One little boy stays behind. He looks at the picture collage Mavis has on her wall. Mavis smiles and walks up behind him.

MAVIS
Don’t you want your cake?

He fingers a prom picture with Mavis Nikki and Delores.

Dante
You really gonna teach us to make a poem?

MAVIS
If you want.

DANTE
You wanna know who the prettiest one is?

He points to her, smiles and runs off.

Mavis smiles and picks up a backpack someone left on the mat to take it to the cubbbyholes. Aquila enters. Mavis looks up.

MAVIS
What are you doing here?

AQUILA
‘Came to see you.

MAVIS
Why?

AQUILA
You're the director of women's outreach services aren't you?

MAVIS
Yeah.

AQUILA
Chyna?

A timid little girl, in a yellow dress enters, stands by Aquila.

AQUILA
This is my little sister. I'm raising her.

MAVIS
You look very pretty.

CHYNA
Thank you.

AQUILA
I need some child care assistance. My mother died of Lupus so I am her legal guardian now.

MAVIS
Um, sure.

Mavis fumbles through her desk, unsure and clumsy. Aquila watches her calmly. Aquila notices that Mavis’ finger is ring free. Mavis sees.

MAVIS
Its okay. Andre and I are not together anymore.

Mavis finds the forms and hands them to Aquila. She gives Chyna a sucker from her desk.

AQUILA
I’m sorry.

MAVIS
Don’t be. His ring cost more of me than I could afford.

AQUILA
I can respect that.

Aquila takes the forms and grabs Chyna by the hand. She heads to the door, then pauses

AQUILA
I know it is none of my business, but for what it is worth, sometimes when God closes one door, He opens another.

Mavis looks completely amazed.

INT. NIKKI’S PLACE
MAVIS is listening to some music on the radio, as Nikki braids her hair.

NIKKI
Okay, all done. You look good, girl.

MAVIS
Xavier ain’t serving just meat at this BBQ, is he?

NIKKI
It’s the least he could do. I devoted the last three years to all the community outreach; I basically run the business. Xavier laughs that goofy big bellied laugh with Bernie over drinks and now he’s buying Bernie out? It ain’t right.

Nikki burns the end of Mavis’ last braid with a lighter. Mavis gets up and goes to the kitchen nook and bites into a carrot.

NIKKI
Sadiq called yesterday. He asked about you.

MAVIS drops her carrots and starts picking them up.

MAVIS
I heard he was still into Aquila. Look,I’m never going to pretend I am something I’m not again, Nikki.

NIKKI
Nobody is your friend who demands you silence or denies your right to grow.

MAVIS
Alice Walker.

NIKKI
That’s my girl.

EXT. SADIQ’S DUPLEX.
LITTLE GIRLS SINGING

ALL
Who are they, who are they, and who thinks they bad?
Who are they, who are they, and who thinks they bad?

GIRL ONE
Ummph. She think she bad!

GIRL TWO
Baby doll, don't get me mad!

GIRL ONE
Ummph. She think she tuff!

GIRL TWO
Tuff enough to whup your stuff!

ALL
Ain't she bad? Ain't she tuff? She’s all the way hot stuff!

Mavis smiles walks up to Sadiq’s door. Destiny, older now is sitting on the porch. She recognizes Mavis and gets up and meows. Mavis scratches her head then looks and sees his car in the driveway, and a strange car on the street. She hesitates. The gardenia and a card are in her shaky hand. She hears voices inside and peeks inside the mail slot. Sadiq holds a guitar. Aquila stands next to him. Mavis closes the mail slot. She drops the gardenia and the card on the porch and rushes to her car.

INT. SADIQ’s APARTMENT

SADIQ
So you’re really moving to Arizona.

Aquila reaches in her purse and takes out a card.

AQUILA
Congratulations on the graduation. And yes,me and Chyna are outtie. I’ll be done in two years. Talia and Tif will be done before me on time like I should’ve been.

SADIQ
But you’re going back. Ain’t no man out there, I hope.

AQUILA
Here you go. Why is it when a woman tries to do something for herself do brothers think a man gotta be connected to it?

SADIQ
There usually is.

Aquila shakes her head.

AQUILA
Still the biggest dog I know.

SADIQ
Me?

AQUILA
Yeah I said it. You don’t have the maturity to have a real relationship so you hide. That’s why you and me never worked. I was honest about what I wanted. You weren’t.

SADIQ
Why you downing a brother?

AQUILA
I’m telling you this not to put you down, but to build you up. Let me tell you something; it don’t cost you nothing to admit when you’re scared or to admit when you’re wrong. But pride costs a lot.

SADIQ
When you get to be so smart?

AQUILA
One of us had to be.

Aquila walks to the door, and Sadiq lets her out. As she walks to her car, Sadiq sees the card and the gardenia.

INT. BEDROOM
Mavis and Nadine lay sprawled across the bed. Mavis is rubbing Nadine’s feet and legs with lotion. NADINE gets up and goes into the CLOSET. She brings back a old bound journal. In it are clippings from her father. The honor roll. Poetry. Newspaper articles he wrote dealing with civil rights. College transcripts.

NADINE
He never finished. It bothered him more than it bothered me. I thought that if I could make him feel like a man, he would stop trying to prove he was one.

SILENCE.

INT. CHURCH-WOMEN’S REVIVAL
Drumming. Dancing. Spirituals. Women getting the spirit. Nadine makes her way down to the center isle walking with old women in white, her hand shaking gently.

Reverend Lee
Give what belongs to Ceasar to Ceasar, and what belongs to God to God! Come as you are, child. Bring your pain for healing. Come now, child. Come now. Leave it at the alter.

Mavis gets up and walks toward the alter. She kneels down next to her mother. Reverend Lee smiles.

Reverend Lee
Know that God is all and everything. Nothing by heaven or earth can keep you from God’s love. Let it go. Let it go!

Old black women in white touch Mavis’ forehead and Nadine’s head shakes. Mavis opens her arms tears streaming down. She smiles.

EXT. PARK-AFTERNOON
A good old-fashioned summer BBQ is going on. Music playing, DANCING. Lots of food is on several tables, and people are eating and drinking. Little girls are playing double dutch. Boys watch. Clapping games. WOMEN and MEN dancing, having fun. Mavis walks through the crowd watching them briefly. Someone bumps into her. It is Xavier.

XAVIER
Sorry. Mavis? What up!(he hugs her) You look good, babygirl.

MAVIS
You too.

XAVIER
Don’t lie. Years are catching up with a man. Your other half is over there putting some tofu on the grill. Go get you some food, girl cause you know they are going to wait on you like one pig waits on another.

Xavier motions toward Nikki who is by one of the grills a little ways down.

MAVIS
Tell Nikki to save me a plate.

SANDBOX
MAVIS heads off to the sandbox. Xavier watches her leave, looks a little sad. Sadiq is making his way through the crowd. He spots Xavier.

SADIQ
Sup, X!

Xavier smiles and give Sadiq big hug.

XAVIER
Sup, player! Filling out a lil huh? You been lifting, boy? Lookin' like Popeye! You haven't been to jail, have you?

Sadiq
Aww, naw man. Just trying to stay focused. Sup with you?

XAVIER

Player, I’m black hotter than July and ready for some prime meat!(Eyeing some young women) I'm about to bite one of them thighs over there.(Sadiq smiles, good naturedly, but is clearly uninterested in the women.) Oh I’m sorry I know you go to church now and all that, but you asked. So why you here anyway, man? I thought you had plans.

SADIQ
Plans change.

XAVIER
Yeah, they do. Look over there.

Xavier motions toward the swing, where Mavis is.

SADIQ
How long she been here?

XAVIER
Long enough for me to know she ain't looking for me.

Sadiq nods to Xavier, who is smiling approvingly, then starts towards Mavis.

SWING
Mavis has slowed down and stops swinging. She closes her eyes and rubs her shoulders. She feels a hand on her shoulder. She opens her eyes and it is Sadiq. He sits down beside her. Beat, then Sadiq pulls the envelope out of his pocket with the card.

MAVIS
You got it.

SADIQ
‘bout time.

Looks down at her finger, ring free.

MAVIS
It weighed down my hand. So. Where’s Aquila?

Sadiq remains silent.

MAVIS
I'm sorry. It’s none of my business anyway.

MAVIS gets up and starts walking away. Sadiq follows her and catches her hand.

SADIQ
You and me been talking mess since the day we met. Maybe it’s time to stop all this.

MAVIS
What do you want?

SADIQ
Let me love you. At least show me how.

Mavis backs away and hesitates for a moment and turns from Sadiq. A moment of precarious tension. Then--Mavis takes a deep breath and turns around. They hug, then kiss tenderly against the backdrop of the park, and children playing.
